The heat of Salem’s palm warmed Charlotte. They were nearing the lands of his people after traveling most of the night.. “My people don’t stay in streaks, at least the majority of them don’t. We’ll have to set up a sign that we want to meet if we expect any of them to come to us.”

Charlotte frowned. “But wouldn’t that also be a sign for the Order?”

Salem nodded. She was tucked against his side while the others followed, far behind and out of sight. They hadn’t been alone since his confession and it made every spot they touched burn. “It’s a risk we have to take if you’re serious about rallying them for help. I don’t think you’re going to get far with summoning others to aid you. But since I’m taking you as a mate, I choose to trust you.”

Charlotte decided to not push the matter. Besides, how could she scold them when all her own feelings were all mixed up? There would be time to focus and put all these emotions into words later. For now, they had to save the others. “Thank you.”

Salem smiled at her, and her heart skipped. “The trick is to use a certain wood.” He nodded to a grove nearby. “We just need to break some of this apart and burn it. My people’s leaders will notice it and send envoys. We won’t burn it too long, just enough for the scent to permeate the area.” He snapped some of the smaller trees and crouched down, building a fire.

She had to admit. He was impressive. But as he did so, she could see his puckered flesh from his scars straining against the shirt. It took everything in her to not reach out and touch them again. But she didn’t want to do anything that would rouse bad memories. At least, not right now.

“Done,” Salem announced, wiping his hands off and rocking back on his heels. “You don’t have to stare. These are my badges so I know to stay away from humans.” He chuckled. “Most humans. You’re in a category all of your own.” His eyes sparkled as he spoke, taking away some of the barb of his words.

“I wish you never had to endure any of that. It’s not right.” Her fist clenched at her side. “We’re going to stop them, Salem. We’re going to make sure they never hurt anyone ever again. I’ll do everything I can for that.”

Salem tilted his head as he studied her, and his dark-red hair obscured his eyes. “Everything but putting yourself at risk.”

“No, I will-“

“No, you misunderstand. I’m not saying that I want you to. I’m telling you that I’m not going to let you. If it comes down to your life or stopping them, I choose you.”

They were interrupted as the bushes near them parted and two giant tigers stalked out. One growled and sunk down into a crouch. “Why are you here?” a deep, rumbly voice demanded.

“Wait,” the other tiger interrupted, voice feminine. “His smell, it’s not typical Salem.
